Viola Virginia Hageman (daughter of John Hageman and Anna Carlson) was born March 28, 1902 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, and died May 1, 1980 in Danville, Virginia. She married (1st) Clyde Daniel Hanes on December 25, 1921, son of George Henry Hanes and Cora Etta White. Then she married (2nd) Ralph Smith.
Viola Hageman's parents were Dutch and English related to King Hagerdon of Sweden.

According to Dania Hanes Smith sometime after their father died in the car accident, an insurance man, Ralph Smith, began dating Viola when she was still running the drug store. He loved the children a lot. They eventually married, lived in Chicago (72nd and Carpenter-Woodlawn) and moved to Virginia in 1939 (where Ralph had family) with Viola's 3 children. Viola and Ralph had another child together, Carl Taylor Smith.
Dania said that Grandpa George Hanes did not like Viola much. I guess he was tough to get along with.
Ralph adopted the children. Since the girls names would change with marriage, I believe their names were changed to Smith. Since Clyde Daniel Hanes, Jr. was a boy, his name was not changed.
