From The Bee, Danvile, VA - Thursday, Jan 24, 1963 Rites tomorrow for R. P. Smith Funeral rites for Ralph Payne Smith, who succumbed to a heart condition in Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, will be conducted from the Wrenn-Yeatts chapel tomorrow at 2 p.m. and interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. Mr. Smith was a native of Vance Co., NC born August 20, 1893, a son of the late Rev. Joseph E. Smith and Blanch Blackwell Smith. Most of his life was spent in Gary, Ind., but for the past 23 years had made his home in Danville. Until retiring a year ago he owned and operated the Town Insurance Agency. Previously he had been a Justice of the Peace in the city for a number of years. He was a graduate of Valparaiso University of Indiana. In September of 1935 he married the former Miss Viola Hageman, who survives. Mr. Smith was a charter member of the North Main Baptist Church. Beside his wife. he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Arlene Kidder, Denver Colorado; one son, Carl Taylor Smith II [named for Ralph's brother], Richmond; three step children Mrs. J. T. Evans, Mrs. James E. Smith both of Danville and Clyde Daniel Hanes Jr., Richmond. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: Dr. Roy P. Smith, Fort Myers, Florida; J. Edwin Smith, Gary, Indiana; E. Vernon Smith and Mrs. Robert Tranter both of Franklin, Indiana. Eleven grand children and two great grand children also survive. The body is at the funeral home and the family is at 168 Clement Ave.
