WILLIAM JOSEPH MOORE HOLLAND
W.J.M. HOLLAND DIES SUNDAY, CLOSING A LONG, USEFUL LIFE
Attesting at his death the many, many friends he numbered through life, funeral services were held here Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 for William J.M. Holland, Sr., who died at his home in North High Street Sunday afternoon after an illness of many months. Mr. Holland, who had been a funeral director here for more than half a century, had an unusual gift for making friends, and in the countless homes of sorrow to which he had been called by the duties of his profession he manifested a very real and active sympathy to everyone in distress, which had endeared him to all with whom he came in contact on
similar occasions. In point of attendance, Mr. Holland's funeral was one of the largest ever held here, while the feelings of those who came were also shown in the profusion of floral tributes brought or sent.
Mr. Holland, who would have been 75 years of age in December of this year, was born in the South Quay community of Nansemond County, the son of the late Joseph G. and Mrs. Martha Howell Holland. Moving to Franklin in the early nineties, he established the funeral directing business here, in later years associated with his sons, and establishing a branch house in Murfreesboro four years ago.
He was a consistent member of the Franklin Christian Church and of the Virginia Funeral Director Association, and was affiliated with the Woodmen of the World fraternal order. He married Miss Essie Gertrude Pretlow of this county who survives him, together with three sons, Stanley T. Holland and W.J.M. Holland, Jr. of this town and Joel Cook Holland of Murfreesboro; one daughter, Mrs. Roy T. Matthews of Franklin, and six grandchildren, Mrs. W.J. Coward, Jr., Nancy Yorke Holland, S.T. Holland Jr., W.J.M. Holland 3rd, Samuel
Holland and Roy T. Matthews, Jr.
Funeral services were conducted from the residence Tuesday afternoon by his pastor, Dr. Elwood W. Jones, assisted by the other ministers of the town, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, Rev. B.B. Bland, Rev. John A. Gray and Rev. J.S. Maxey.
Active pallbearers were: Harry Steinhardt, John O. Haslett, E.K. Brinkley, Frank R. Day, Cecil Vaughan, 3rd, W.H. Norfleet, Dr. Ashby Cutchins, J.A. Williams, and J. Fenton Matthews, all of Franklin, and Harold Eaton of Burlington, N.C. Visiting funeral directors from various places and a number of friends of the family acted as honorary bearers. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
