Thomas A. Sharp, of Sanibel died August 10, 2003. He was born in Reidsville, NC, the son of James Merritt and Annie Britt Blackwell Sharp.

Tom was educated in the Reidsville Public Schools and Graduated in the Class of 1933, Salutatorian and President of his senior class. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in the class of 1937. Tom was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa and President of the local chapter of American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Upon graduation he worked as a Research Engineer in Parlin, NJ in the Laboratory of the E.I. Dupont De Nemours. During WWII he was employed by the Andover Kent Aviation Corp. as Chief Chemist. His company products were radomes and magnetic detector housings made by low pressure autoclave technique. The work was transferred to the Remington Rand Laboratory in South Norwalk, CT.

After WWII he worked in the Remington Rand Laboratory of Advanced Research and Development. There he was Manager of General Services which included drafting, chemistry, physics, metallurgy and photography. Tom has two patents. He was transferred in 1963 to the Sperry Rand Computer UNIVAC Research Laboratory in Philadelphia.

He retired to Sanibel Island in 1980 where he was President of the Board of Directors of the Island Water Association. For many years he was a member of the Vegetation Committee of the City of Sanibel. Tom was an active participant in the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for 23 years.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice "Bobbie" Robinson Carpender Sharp of Sanibel and daughter Tyrrell Carpender Sharp of Laughlintown, PA.
