John is not recorded in the 1870 census, however, Sarah M. Winbourn (48) is still in Nansemond Co. with children Elisha B. (18), John R. (16), Phillip J. (14), and Lula D. (9). Sarah has real estate valued at $800 and a personal estate at $180.

The 1880 Federal Census for Holy Neck District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 55 records S. M. Winborne (57) with her son E. B. (25) and daughter Lola (18). Also in the household is Sarah's grand daughter, Mary M. Butler (14). Mary is the daughter of Mary C. Winborne and James H. Butler: The 1870 Federal Census for Windsor Township, Isle of Wight Co., VA, Zuni Station P. O. records James H. (31) and Mary C. (25) Butler with their daughters Mary M. (2) and Sarah J. (8/12).

John married Sarah Matilda Howell on 12 Jul 1842 in Southampton Co., Va. (Sarah Matilda Howell was born about 1821 in Virginia and died after 1880 in Nansemond Co, VA..)
