Calvin Roberts

  General Notes:

According to family stories related by Robert F. Hill in 2004, Calvin owned a farm in Nansemond Co. during the War Between the States. When Union forces came through the area, the Yankees confiscated all the animals. After they left, the family found a sword, which they kept and hid under the house. It remained in the family many years as a sort of reparations to the terrible treatment they endured.

The 1860 Federal Census for Lower Parish, Nansemond, Virginia, Suffolk P. O., page 46, dated July 31, 1860 records Calvin (31 - VA) and Elizabeth (29 - VA) Roberts with children Savanna (6) and William A. (4). Also in the household is Milly Powell (26 - VA). Calvin is a farmer with real estate valued at $600 and a personal estate valued at $200. The next page of this census record lists Calvin's future wife, Melvina Archer. Apparently Elizabeth died, perhaps in the birth of a daughter, Mary A. Roberts, who is listed in the 1870 census as Mary and then Mollie in 1880.


The 1870 Federal Census for Chuckatuck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, page 186B records Calvin (39) and Melvina (25) with children Savanna (17), William A. (14), Mary A. (8), and Calvin A. (1).

The 1880 Federal Census for Chuckatuck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, District 52, page 21A, dated June 11, 1880 records Calvin (50) and Melvinia (35) with children Mollie (18), Calvin (11), Odie (8), Stephen (7), Eddie (6), Wilber (4), and James (6/12).

The 1900 Federal Census for Chuckatuck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, District 52, page 32B, dated June 12, 1900 records Calvin (Jan 1829 - VA/VA/VA) and Melvinie (May 1838 - VA/VA/VA) with children S. E. (April 1873), Hurley (March 1884), and V. K. (Jan 1887). Calvin and Melvinie have been married for 48 years and have had 9 children of whom 6 are still living.

The 1910 Federal Census for Chuckatuck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, District 52, page 27A, dated April 15, 1910 records Calvin (83 - VA/VA/VA) and Melvinia (64 - VA/VA/VA). Calvin and Melvinia have been married for 50 years and have had 8 children of whom 6 are still living.

[I] have done several web searches for Archibald Roberts and your website is the first to pop up. What is the connection? I have a family bible with the following family data recorded:
Parents - Calvin Roberts (7-29-1829 to 5-2-1919) married Melina Archer Roberts (7-14-1845 to 1-29-1930)
The following names were just a list in the family bible but I am assuming they are children of Calvin and Melina:
Leo....das Roberts 4-1-1867 to 4-15-1868. I can't make out the full name as written Leo...das?
Calvin Archer Roberts 9-14-1868 to 6-2-1946. I think this is granddaddy's father, our great grandfather.
