The marriage certificate for James Paul Garrett and Elizabeth Maria Craig indicate that Elizabeth was born in Florida and her father is George Mc C Craig ... that's right ... Mc C as a given name!

Researching her father seems to indicate that McC was indeed a given name for a man whose family was a long time, prominant family in Augusta Co., Virginia. McC is most likely a shortened form of McChesney in that the WWI Darft registration for the son, Mars Craig, records the full name as Mars McChesney Craig. The 1900 Federal Census for Virginia, Augusta Co., South River, District 39, page 299A records George McC Craig (July 1861-VA) married to Mary E. (March 1862-Florida) with children Benjamin J. (Feb 1889-Florida), Mar McC (June 1892-Florida), Marie E. (Oct 1894-Florida) {indexed as Merie E.), Evelyn (January 1897-Florida), and Eugenia A. (March 1899-Florida). George and Mary have been married 13 years with 5 children. There is no value indicated on the real estate for the family, however, there are 19 people living at the residence that are classified as servants, laborers, or cooks (including children). Mary's father is from North Carolina and mother from Georgia. see the 1920 census facts for her husband James Garrett.

Elizabeth's brothers, Mars and Benjamin, were living in Salem, VA at 20 Market Street, just one block away from the James Price Garrett family. This is how Elizabeth was able to meet her future husband, James Paul Garrett, in Salem.

The 1900 Federal Census for Florida, Manatee Co., Palmetto, District 83 records a George (June 1854) and Sarah E. (Jan 1869) Craig family that could have been the family for this Elizabeth Craig. Many similarities to her actual family but it is not the correct one. Children include: Maud L. (Aug 1887), John A. (Oct 1888), Lottie O. (Feb 1891), Lizzie P. (Sept 1892), Vannie P. (Apr 1896), and Mary E. (Apr 1898). They have been married 14 years. I include it here as a false leed.
