see notes on his father, James Garrett for 1910 census facts ... the family is living in Salem, VA and according to WWI Draft registrations, at least some of the Craig family (Mars and Benjamin Craig) are living in Salem, Va as of 1917.

The marriage license is on record at the Roanoke Co., Virginia Courthouse in Salem, VA. It lists James' parents as J. P. and Anna L. Garrett and Elizabeth's parents as George McC. Craig (no name for the mother). The marriage takes place on Nov. 20, 1917 with James' age as 29 and Elizabeth as 24, born in Florida. see notes on Elizabeth Maria Craig.

The WWI Draft Registration Card for James Paul Garrett dated June 5, 1917 lists his date of birth as October 28, 1888 in Rockingham Co., NC. He is living at 813 13th Street, SW, Roanoke, VA. and is working as Secretary/Treasurer for the Roanoke Notion Co. His physical description is medium in height and build with light brown eyes and black hair.

The 1920 Federal Census (ED#32, page 125A, taken Jan 1920) records James P. (31) and Elizabeth (26) Garrett living in Roanoke, Va. at 510 Elm Avenue with their son Paul A. Garrett (1 8/12). Elizabeth indicates her father was born in Virginia and mother in Florida.

The 1930 Federal Census (ED#36, page 37A, taken April 1930) records James P. (38) and Elizabeth (36) Garrett living in Roanoke, Va. at 1109 Oregon Avenue in Raleigh Court District with their children James M. Garrett (9), Richard E. (8), and Betty J. (2 4/12).

Roanoke/Salem/Vinton City Directories from 1927 through 1932 record James P. Garrett with his wife Eliz C. living on Spring Rd in 1927 and later at 1109 Oregon Avenue in the Weaver Heights section of Roanoke. It appears that this neighborhood has been "urban renewed" as Rte 220/581 came through the area in the 1960s. James is the Secretary Treasurer for the Shenandoah Brokerage Company. James and Elizabeth do not appear in the directories again until 1948. At this time they are listed as J.
