bullet  General Notes:

The 1920 Federal Census (ED#129, page 246A, Sheet 4A) records Annie M. Garrett living at 502 Otterview Avenue in the Raleigh Court area of Roanoke City, Va. In the household are her daughters, Ruth E. (22), Annie Mae (30) and son William S. (21) Garrett. Both Ruth and Annie are Public School Teachers.

The 1930 Federal Census for Raleigh Court, Roanoke City, VA (Dist 33, page 259A) records the widow Anna M. Garrett (68) living with her son William S. Garrett (31 - VA/VA/VA) and his wife, Marie L. (30 - Delaware/Delaware/Delaware) and their son William S. Garrett, Jr. (1) at 502 Otterview Avenue. [Otterview is the old name for what is now called Maiden Lane] Anna is recorded as a widow even though her husband's death certificate lists 1932 as the year of his death. Perhaps he was sick (maybe TB) and in a hospital or maybe the Catawba Sanatorium where his son Grady was living. James P. Garrett's death certificate records his place of death as Roanoke, VA.

In 1940, Anna is living with her son ... see general notes on her son William S. Garrett, Sr.

From www.findagrave.com:
Birth: July 1861 - Henry Co., VA
Death: Jan. 12, 1945 - Beaver Co., PA
Burial: Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA
Cremated

Died of of stomach cancer while living with her daughter Anna Mae.

She was a very refined lady, immaculately and tastefully dressed and groomed. She was very attractive and always wore her diamond earrings and her diamond ring. She had a very fair complexion and cared about her appearance, going to the beauty parlor to have her pretty white hair set, etc. She also did beautiful knitting, creating beautiful knit suits and dresses. She had a great sense of humor. Despite geographical isolation in her younger years, she always had an active social life, according to her son, with much visiting and letter writing. She always had a reputation for good looks and charm.

She was concerned about the problems of educating her eight children in the country and was attracted to Salem, VA by its good schools and the availability of Roanoke College for the boys and Elizabeth College (now moved to Charlotte, NC, as Queen's College) for the girls. It was her idea to move the family to Salem in 1901.
