General Notes:
from: http://webpages.charter.net/chamberlayne/minter/mnotes.htm Minters of Henry County by Donald W. Chamberlayne : chamberlayne@charter.netJesse Minter The youngest of the sons of John and Susannah, Jesse Minter, was born in 1802 or 1803, derived from his age of 47 in the 1850 census. He married Elvira Hurt and resided in Bedford County. The census gave his occupation as a shoemaker in 1850 and as a farmer in 1860. Jesse and Elvira had at least eight children, one of whom was Augustus S. (or "L." in the census), who was born in 1826. This son was the Capt. A. S. Minter, who wrote the letter in 1898, addressed to J. A. Minter of Tyler, Alabama, that was discussed in the Minter Genealogical Bulletin, and in Note 3C above. Based on that letter, it was stated in the Bulletin that the Captain's father Jesse "... was poor, married young and raised a large family." Drawing on the work of Judith Parks America Hill, in her 1925 history of Henry County, the Captain himself was said to have been "... a Captain in the Confederate Army, supervisor for his home district, member of the Va. Legislature from Bedford county, Va. In 1898 he lost most of what he had at that time due to a flood on the Staunton River, but still owned a nice farm and lived in comfort." [p.165]
The 1850 Federal Census for The Southern Division, Bedford Co., VA, page 258A records Jesse (46) and Elvira (42) Minter with children Robert B. (18), Dave G. (14), Amanda C. (11), Sally (9), Henry C. (6), Jesse S. (4), and Eliza (1). Jesse is a Shoemaker and Robert is a Carpenter. Jesse has real estate valued at $300 and owns 4 slaves. Note: A. L. Minter is also found in the 1850 census for Bedford Co.
The 1860 Federal Census for The Southern Revenue Division, Bedford Co., VA records Jesse (57) and E. (52) Minter with children A. C. (21), S. W. (19), C. H. (16), J. L. (13), and E. S. (11). Jesse is a Farmer and has real estate valued at $7,300 and a personal estate valued at $9,000 including 12 slaves.
The 1870 Federal Census for Lisbon Township, Bedford Co., VA, Liberty P. O., page 276A records Jesse (67) and Elvira (62) Minter living alone. Jesse is a Farmer but the war has been hard on them as his real estate is now valued at $0 and his personal estate vlaued at $250.
Apparently Elvira dies and Jesse remarried: The 1880 Federal Census for Staunton District, Bedford Co., VA, District 24 records Jesse Minter (77) with his wife Fannie A. (34) and step daughter Mary A. Snow (9).
Jesse married Elvira Hurt. (Elvira Hurt was born circa 1807 in Virginia and died circa 1872 in Liberty P. O. , Lisbon Township, Bedford Co., VA.)
