It appears that Joseph George Lovelace married his mother's sister, Lydia M. "Lillie" Harris. Thus, he married his aunt.

The 1880 Federal Census for Mayo Township, Rockingiham Co., NC, District 228, page 48A, dated June 25, 1880 records M. G. Loveless (34 - NC/NC/NC) with his wife L. Loveless (38 - NC/NC/NC) and children C. E. (13) [daughter], M. A. (11)[daughter], C. (9)[son], L. A. (6)[daughter], J. (4)[daughter], and M. G. (1 )[daughter]. Nearby is M. G.'s grandfather, Walter Lovelace. Page 43A of this census records Lydia's mother living with her son James ... see general notes on Lydia's brother, James W. Harris.

Joseph married Lydia M. "Lillie" Harris, daughter of Charles W. Harris and Cyntha, on 13 Jan 1866 in Rockingham Co., NC. (Lydia M. "Lillie" Harris was born circa 1844 in Rockingham Co., N.C. and died after 1880 in Rockingham Co., N.C..)
