bullet  General Notes:

The 1920 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 19, page 196B records Hurley (25 - VA/VA/VA) and Allie (25) Holland with children David (3 2/12), Dona E. (2), and Robert E. (3/12).

The 1930 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 9, page 146B records David H. (35 - NC/NC/NC) and Mandy I. (25) Holland with children David H. (13), Donna E. (11), Robert E. (9), William B. (7), Mary C. (5), Virginia D. (3), and Lydia L. E. (8/12). David reports being first married at age 21 while Mandy at age 23 ... thus David must have lost his first wife, Allie, and married Mandy 2 years ago.
Next door is Hugh (37) and Annie (34) Holland and family. Hugh is possibly David's brother.

The 1940 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 62-12, page 146B records D. Hurley (45 - VA) and Amanda (35 - VA) Holland with children Diana (ab) (21), William B. (17), Mary C. (14), Emmaline (11), John (9), and Gilbert (7).

Allie D. Roberts middle name of Deborah came from census records. The middle name of Deventary came from Francis Stabler in an email below ...
In a followup email dated June 3, 2011:
Bo.
Thanks for the response. My wife's mother was from Holland, VA and her father was from TN. He was in the Navy, and Liz spent a number of extended stays at her mother's home in Virginia while her father was getting family arrangements set up at a new station. She had (1/2?) aunts and uncles near her age and enjoyed the visits. She was even in school in Holland for part of a year.
Liz's mother was Dana Elizabeth Holland, daughter of David Hurley Holland and Allie Deventary Roberts. This does give her a Roberts Conection that you asked about. Her maternal ancesters back from Allie Roberts are Lydia Ophelia Doughtie, Cornelia Octavia Wiggins, Annie Christian Harrell, Margaret Savage. More work needed to extend the line farther back.
We attended a David Hurley Holland Family reunion in 2009. It was a good opportunity to see family that we seldom visit. We live in Michigan and most of my research is on-line. I am from SC and I occasionally do actual archive and court house research in SC when I visit relatives there. Unfortunately, South Carolina has the same genealogy record problem as Virginia - too many of the records were burned in the Civil War.
Best regards
Francis Stabler
