The 1930 Federal Census for Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA, District 9, page 73A, dated April 8, 1930 records Rufus Adkins (30) with his wife Mabel L. (26) and children Harrel L (3) and Herzie L. (11/12) living on Dalton Road in Chatham, Pittsylvania Co.,VA. Rufus is a farmer and reports being married since age 16. This researcher suspects the age should be 26 because Mabel reports being married since age 22 ... although, the 1920 census (see general notes on his brother, David C. Adkins, for the 1920 census facts) where Rufus Adkins (22) is with his wife Tecie H. (21) and their children Wade (3) and Elsie (5/12). Perhaps Rufus was married at age 16 after all and then had another family.
