The 1880 Federal Census for Danville City, Pittysylvania Co., Virginia, District 180, page 492A records J. G. (34) and Sallie (28) Penn with children Mary (7), Pemberton (5), James (3), and Annie (4/12) living on Main Street. Also in the household is mother-in-law Mary Pemberton (50-widow). J. G. is a Tobacco Merchant.
The 1900 Federal Census for Danville City, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, District 104, page 91B records James (May 1842) and S. Mary (June 1855) Penn with children James G. Jr. (July 1877) and A. Lee (Aug 1879) living at 862 Main Street. James and Mary have been married 17 years, however, they are listed as having no children. This is apparently not Sallie Pemberton but a second wife.
James married Sallie B. Pemberton, daughter of John H. Pemberton and Mary H. Worsham. (Sallie B. Pemberton was born circa 1852.)
