Hetty is without husband in 1870 [he is killed during the Vicksburg Campaign in the Civil War]: The 1870 Federal Census for Washington Township, Wayne Co., Iowa, page 77 records Ellie (sic) A. (43 - TN) Hogue and children James B. (19 - Iowa), Margaret J. (16 - Iowa), Frances E. (15 - Iowa), William E. (13 - Iowa), and Joseph G. (11 - Iowa).

The 1880 Federal Census for Washington Township, Wayne Co., Iowa, District 238, page 246A records the widow Hetty A. Hogue (52 - TN/TN/TN) and children William E. (23 - Iowa) and Joseph G. (21 - Iowa). Her son, James B. Hogue (29 - Iowa), is next door with his children Laura E. (7) and William A. (4). James is recorded as "widowed".

Hetty and her daughter, Harriet and her husband Philip Brock, and her sons, James B., William Edward and Joseph Gilbert, moved out west to Custer Co., Nebraska.
