Joseph Robert Woods [Maintained by Frank Greenbaum]
Birth: Aug. 12, 1863 Catawba (Roanoke County), Roanoke County, VA
Death: Apr. 12, 1915 Salem City, VA
One of 12 children, he was raised as a farmer in Catawba, Virginia. "[His] father died in June 1882 intestate with his estate somewhat but not heavily indebted. About 2000 acres of mountain land he owned was sold to pay the indebtedness and "Indian camp" was partitioned, after cutting off the dower, 252 acres, with the home to [his] mother, among the eleven [remaining] heirs of his father... Joe finally bought out all the shares and later the dower, and then owned 'Indian Camp' as [his] father had owned it \emdash about 470 acres with 100 acres additional in Mason's Cove, and the 'Beckner Place' of 50 acres in the Gap. When he decided to move his family to Salem, he sold the whole for $12,000 \emdash very cheap.
Joe was very timid, though very firm in holding to his opinions maturely formed and, usually correctly. He enjoyed to the upmost the confidence of his business associates.
Joe spent one year at V.P.I. and later attended the Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio. As a young man he taught country school for one or two sessions and was a Catawba District school trustee, as well as being a Roanoke county surveyor for a number of years." (written by his brother, James P. Woods, circa August 1943).
He married Mary Leslie Shields Hubbert on November 15, 1894 and together they had 4 children.
In the early 1900s, Joe moved his family to Salem and opened Woods Hardware Company, operating it for many years before his death in 1915 from mastoiditis. The business was sold after his death to Brown's Hardware Co. in August of 1918.
