The 1940 census record below is our Viola in that the document has her grand mother, Barbara Ebinger, living with the family:
The 1940 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, 37th Ward, District 51-1371, page 16802B, dated April 6, 1940 records Viola Scharmberg (sic) (24 - PA) with her husband Arthur Scharmberg (28 - PA) and son David Scharmberg (9/12 - PA) renting a place at 3253 13th Street for $35 / month. Arthur has completed 4 years of high school and is employed as a Fireman in the Fire Department earning $1,230 working 50 weeks during the last year. Viola has completed 8 years of schooling and is not employed. Also in the household is the widowed grand mother-in-law, Barbara Ebinger (79 - Germany) and an Uncle-in-law, Louis Ebinger (48 - PA). They have both completed 8 years of schooling. Louis is employed as a Taxi Cab Driver and earned $720 working 40 weeks during the last year.
Note: Barbara indicates that she is a widow; however, her husband, Jacob does not pass until 1946 ... see medical notes on Viola's grand father, Jacob Ebinger.



The records below document a Viola Troup in Philadelphia. It appears that this Viola Troup is not our Viola Troup in that the grand parents differ from known grandparents ...
The 1930 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, Ward 43 (ED# 1107, page 209A), dated April 4, 1930 records Viola Troup (14 - PA/PA/PA) living with her grand parents Edwin (59 - NJ/Saxony/NJ) and Alice L. (52 - PA/PA/PA) Vogenberg at 3033 Marshall Street. Also in the household are Allen E. Vogenberg (31 - PA) and his son Wesley J. Vogenberg (4 3/12). Edwin is a Painter with his own shop and Allen is a Painter as well. Allen indicates he is married but his wife is not listed.

Viola Troup as a grand child of Edwin and Alice Vogenberg is not consistent with other records for our Viola Troup. Most likely this Viola Troup is not the daughter of Ulysses Troup as recorded in 1920. Documents below indicate Edwin and Alice do not have a daughter and for that matter, Alice appears to be a 2nd wife to Edwin ... as Edwin is first married to a Viola ... many questions.

The 1900 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, Ward 33 (ED# 867, page 169A), dated June 9, 1900 records Edward (July 1870 - NJ/Germany/PA) and his wife Viola (April 1870 - NJ/NJ/NJ) Vogenburg and children Elwood (Oct 1895 - PA) and Allen (July 1899 - PA) living at 2835 Franklin Street. Edward is a Painter and has been married Viola for 8 years. They have had 3 children of whom 2 are still living. Also in the household are Annie Kinsey (Sept 1875 - NJ/NJ/NJ) and Wessley Vogenburg (June 1864 - NJ/Germany/PA). Annie is single (a sister to Viola) and a dressmaker while Wessley (brother of Edwin) is married and a painter.

The 1910 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, Ward 43 (ED# 1075, page 32B), dated April 18, 1910 records Edwin W. Vogenberg (39 - NJ/Germany/PA) and his wife Viola (40 - NJ/NJ/NJ) and children Elwood (15 - PA), Allen C. (11 - PA), and Edwin W. (6 - PA) living at 2739 North 9th Street. Edwin is a Painter. Edwin and Viola have been married for 18 years and have had 4 children of whom 3 are still living. Also in the household is Edwin's brother, J. Wesley Vogenburg (47 - NJ/Germany/PA). Edwin is a Painting Contractor, Elwood is an Apprentice to Printing while Wesley is single and a House Painter.

The 1920 Federal Census for Philadelphia, PA, Ward 37 (ED# 1300, page 79A), dated February 8, 1920 records Edward W. Vogenberg (49 - NJ/Germany/PA) and his wife Viola F. (49 - NJ/NJ/NJ) and children Elwood (24 - PA) and Edward (16 - PA) living at 2822 Marvine Street. Edwin is a Painter. Also in the household is Edwin's widowed father-in-law, William H. Kinsey (80 - NJ/NJ/NJ). Edwin is a Building Painter, Elwood is a Pressman in a Printing House while Edward is an Auto Repairman and William Kinsey is Ship Carpenter at the Ship Yard.

Researching William Kinsey: The 1880 Federal Census for Middle Township, Cape May Co., NJ, District 71, page 69A, dated June 19, 1880 records William H. (40 - NJ/NJ/NJ) and Mary J. (31 - NJ/NJ/NJ) Kimsey (sic) with children Viola N. (11 - NJ), Dora P. (9 - NJ), and Hannah A. (6 - NJ). William is an Oysterman.
Kimsey seems to be the actual surname - there is a marriage record for William H. Kimsey and Mary J. Randolph in Cold Spring in the Lower Township of Cape May Co., NJ dated September 2, 1861 and the 1870 Federal Census for Lower Township, Cape May Co., NJ, Cold Spring P. O., dated June 10, 1870 records William Kimsey (30) and his wife Mary (21) with their daughter Viola (2/12). The age of 21 in this census record and being married in 1861 would be an age at marriage for Mary to be 12 years of age!
