bullet  General Notes:

Charles Davis Lucas had three wives with Nancy as their first name. The family kidded him about this and his reply was "When I talk in my sleep I don't want my last wife to get mad at me so I always marry a Nancy. Therefore, she has no way of telling which wife I'm talking about". Charlie had 13 children with his 3 wives.

The 1880 Federal Census for Central Depot, Montgomery Co., VA District 55, page 458B records Charles D. (79) and Nancy B. (46) Lucass [Lucas] with children R. M. (36-male), Anna L. (12), Clara L. (11), and David K. (7). Also in the household is Henrietta Walters (18-step daughter) and C. J. Lucass (53-female). Next door is Nancy Lucass (47-widow) with children Jno. H. (24), Laura V. (21), and Zora B. (14) and then James C. (32) and Nannie A. (25) Lucass with children Linnie G. (2) and Edward B. (1). All individuals and their parents were born in Virginia except Charles D. Lucas mother, who is listed as born in New York. This appears to be a second marriage for Charles D. Lucas as well as his wife Nancy. Nancy has been married to a Walters. R. M. and James C. Lucas are chidlren of Charles and another wife while the widow Nancy Lucas had been married to another son of Charles.

The 1870 Federal Census for Childress Store P.O., Auburn, Montgomery Co., VA, page 51B records Charles D. (70) and Nancy B. (36) Lucass [Lucas] with children Elisabeth (42) and Rice M. (26) and step children John (13), James (11), and Henrietta (8) Walters. Also in the household are children with the current wife: Anna L. (2) and Clara (1) Lucas. Another Lucs resides in the household: Jane (43-house work) who is probably a daughter of Charles. Nearby are the households of sons John and James Lucafs [Lucas]: John (42), Agnes (38), Virginia (26), Henrietta (24), James (22), and Louisiana (19). Then next door is John B. (28) and Lavinia (26) with son William I. (1). The ages for John and Agnes are suspect in that the 1850 census records John (43) and Agnes (39) with children Henrietta (4) and James (2).

The 1860 Federal Census for Childress Store P.O., Montgomery Co., VA, page 640 records Charles D. (59) and Nancy (58) Lucass [Lucas] with children Elizabeth (31), John W. (22), Eldred H. (20), George P. (18), and Rice M. (16). Next door is Samauel Lucass (83) with Catherine J. Lucass (32). The Lucas family is rather wealthy: Samuel has real estate valued at $21,000 and personal property at $3,600 while Charles has real estate valued at $2,500 and personal property at $1,700.

The 1850 Federal Census for Montgomery Co., VA, page 18B records Charles D. (50) and Nancy (48) Lucass [Lucas] with children Elizabeth (21), James (13), John (12), Eldred (11), George (8), and Rice D. M. (7).
