Obituary for Charles Gillespie STEELE, Jr. Roanoke Times dated December 27, 2013 Charles Gillespie Steele Jr., 98, of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles G. and Mary Hooper Steele; infant daughter, Anne Elizabeth Steele and wife Jimmie Marie Martin Steele. He is survived by his children, Charles G. Steele III (Deborah), Rosemary L. Steele, Elizabeth Steele Moore (Jeff); grandchildren, Caitlin and Ryan Moore; assorted grand-dogs and grand-cats. He was retired from the United States Army, serving in World War II at the rank of Major. He was retired from the United States Postal Service and a 50-year veteran of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was co-founder of the Roanoke Postal Employees Federal Credit Union. He was a life-long member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church. He was an avid reader, photographer and enjoyed Broadway plays and musicals. Special thanks to the Palliative Care Unit 10th floor at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care. Friends are welcome to call Friday, December 27, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 318 Church Avenue, Roanoke. A graveside services celebrating Charles' life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Evergreen Burial Park with Rev. Jake Huffman officating. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3959 Electric Rd., Suite 357, Roanoke, VA 24018 or a favorite charity.
