The 1920 Federal Census for Jefferson Ward 1, Roanoke (Independent City), Virginia, District 19, page 6A, dated January 7, 1920 records Hamilton Wade (58 - VA/VA/VA) and Mary C. (53 - KY/VA/VA) Steele with children Byrd Kelley (25 - VA/VA/VA) and Louise Steele (14 - VA/VA/KY) living at 924 First Street. Hamilton is employed as Guarding the Railroad while Byrd is a Stenographer at a Car Company.

The 1930 Federal Census for Jefferson Ward, Roanoke (Independent City), Virginia, District 22, page 244B, dated April 4, 1930 records the widow Mary C. Steele (53 - VA/KY/VA) with daughters Byrd Kelley (30 - VA/VA/VA) and Mary L. Steele (23 - VA/VA/KY) living at 924 First Street. Mary has no employment while Byrd is a Stenographer at a Bank and Mary L. is a Public School Teacher.

AVERY, Howard Shaeffer, 90, of Mahwah, N.J., died Saturday, August 24, 1996. Born in Canon City, Colo., on April 18, 1906, he lived in Roanoke, Va., from 1917 to 1933. He married Mary Louise Steele of Roanoke in 1931, and lived in Mahwah from 1935 until his death. He is survived by his children, Mary Avery Gerlach and her husband, Richard, of Winthrop, N.Y., Byrd Avery Lochtie of Eureka, Calif., Howard Shaeffer (''Shae"") Avery Jr. and his wife, Gwenda, of Marietta, Ga., and Giles Alexander Avery of Mahwah; his nephew, Jon Avery of West Chester, Pa.; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Steele Avery, in 1985, and by his brother, Robert D. Avery, and his son-in-law, Robert M. Lochtie. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, Roanoke, VA
