The 1940 Federal Census for Big Lick District, Roanoke (Independent City), Virginia, District 81-4A, page 83B, dated April 9, 1940 records Charles Steele (56 - VA) [1884] with his wife Mary Steele (52 - VA) with their son Charles Steele Jr. (25) renting at 204 Murrell Road for $15 / month. Charles Jr. is the only one with employment working as a Mail Carrier for the Post Office.

The 1930 Federal Census for Roanoke (Independent City), Virginia, District 32, page 213B, dated April 10, 1930 records Charles G. Steele (46 - VA/VA/VA) [1884] with his wife Mary H. Steele (43 - NC/NC/NC) with their son Charles G. Steele Jr. (15) living at 711 Denniston Avenue. Charles Sr. is Assistent Supt at the Post Office and has been married to Mary for 18 years. Charles owns his home valued at $10,500.

The 1920 Federal Census for Raleigh Court, Roanoke (Independent City), Virginia, District 19, page 6A, dated January 7, 1920 records Charles G. Steele (36 - VA/VA/VA) [1884], Mary H. Steele (33 - NC/VA/VA), Charles G. Steele Jr. (5). Charles is Clerk at the Post Office and lives at 206 Oxford Street.

The 1910 Federal Census for Highland Ward, Roanoke (Independent City), Virginia, District 110, page 42A, dated April 26, 1910 records Charles G. Steele (25 - VA/VA/VA) living with his parents Hamilton W. (45 - VA/VA/VA) and Mary M. (42 - VA/VA/VA) Steele and sister Louise (4) living at 380 Albermarle Avenue. Also in the household are Charles' 1/2 sisters Josephine M. Kelly (23) and Byrd L. Kelly (21). Hamilton and Mary have been married for 12 years and Mary has had 3 children ... thus Charles must have had a different mother than Mary and the girls are 1/2 sisters. Mary was previously married to a Mr. Kelly. Charles is a Clerk at the Post Office and Hamilton is a U. S. Gageur (??) at a Distillery.

The 1900 Federal Census for Abingdon, Washington Co., Virginia, District 105, page 15B, dated June 4, 1900 records Charles G. Steele (Aug 1884 - VA/VA/VA) living with his parents Hamilton W. (March 1861 - VA/VA/VA) and Mary C. (April 1866 - VA/KY/WV) and brother Henry M. Steele (August 1890). Also in the household are Hamilton's brother, James M. Steele (Aug 1853 - VA/VA/VA) and Hamilton's step daughters Josephine M. Kelly (Oct 1885) and Byrd L. Kelly (Jan 1888). Hamilton and Mary have been married for 3 years and Mary has had 2 children. Hamilton is a farmer.

Hamilton Wade Steele - Mary Emmerine Gillespie
Charles Gillespie Steele Jr. (wife is Jimmie Marie Martin) is the son of Charles Gillespie Steele (Sr) and Mary Connelly Hooper. Charles Sr. was born 11 August, 1883 at Richlands, VA. He married Mary Connelly Hooper 10 April 1912, at Morganton NC. Charles (Sr.) died 26 February, 1955 in Roanoke VA.
Charles Steele Sr. was the son of Hamilton Wade Steele and wife Mary Emerine Gillespie. Hamilton Wade Steele was born 2 March, 1861 in Tazewell County, VA. Mary Emerine Gillespie was born 11 January, 1859 in Tazewell County, VA. She was the daughter of Hugh Tiffany Gillespie and his wife, Mary Frances Murphy. Hamilton Wade and Mary Emerine were married 20 October, 1881 at Steelsburg in Tazewell County. Mary Emerine died 12 September, 1895 in Tazewell Co. VA. Hamilton Wade moved to Roanoke, VA, where he died 6 March, 1924. He is buried in Tazewell, VA.
Hamilton Wade Steele was the son of Elihu John Steele and his second wife, Louisa Lockhart. ( "Eli" was married first to Virginia McGuire, on 26 October, 1845. She died 13 November, 1853. ) Eli is the only name ever shown for him in public records. He married Lousia in Tazewell County on 10 July, 1856.
Elihu John Steele was the son of Ralph and Mary (Griffit) Steele. Ralph Steele was born Charles County MD, 10 March, 1776. Ralph was the son of George and Elizabeth (Ratcliff ) Steele. Ralph and Mary were married 3 February, 1803 in Tazewell County, VA. Mary died sometime before 1830 and Ralph died circa 1846 in Tazewell County, VA.
