NEWPORT NEWS - Lea Roy Carter, 71, of 479 Nelson Drive, Newport News, died early today in Riverside Hospital. A native of Gates, N.C., he was a Newport News resident 33 years. Mr. Carter was a member of First Baptist Church, the Dickenson-Shaull Bible Class, Retired Men's Club and Chapter 214, American Association of Retired Persons. He was a retired watchman for Hiden Storage and Forwarding Co.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hattie Greene Carter; a son, James Louis Carter; two daughters, Mrs. Clarine Harris and Mrs. Venita Campbell, all of Newport News; two brothers, D. E. Carter and W. J. Carter of High Point, N.C.; a half-brother, Lonnie Carter of Gatesville, N. C., and four grandchildren.
Funeral service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. W. Guy Webb and Dr. Bruce H. Price. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.
The family is at the home of a daughter; Mrs. Clarine Harris, 10 Wendfield Circle, Newport News.
