Ellis is recorded as 21 years of age and can neither read nor write. Also in the household are Martha A. Ellis (25), Mary J. Ellis (20), Catherine C. Ellis (16), James T. Ellis (14), Robert Ellis (10), Sarah S. Ellis (8), and Imogene Ellis (6).

The 1870 Federal Census for the Dale Township, Chesterfield Co., VA, Manchester P.O., page 226A records Stephen B. Ellis (42 - VA) and wife Caroline A. (35 - VA) and children Willie L. (10), Etta J. (7), and Benjamin (4). Stephen has real estate valued at $1300 and personal property at $125. Stephen is listed as can not read or write.

The 1880 Federal Census for the Dale Township, Chesterfield Co., VA, District 67, page 77B records S. B. Ellis (51 - VA) and wife Cornelia A. (47 - VA) and children Hettie J. (16), Robert B. (12), and Clarence J. (8). Stephen is listed as a farmer. Also in the household is his widowed sister-in-law, Martha J. Huchins (68).

The 1900 Federal Census, Virginia, Chesterfield, Dale, District 4, page 64B records Stephen B. (July 1828) and Cornelia A. (Nov 1834) Ellis (indexed as Ersilia A. Ellen at ancestry.com) with son Clarence J. Ellis (Oct 1871) and daughter [in law] Bertha M. (May 1870) and grand daughter Ruth. It appears that Stephen and Cornelia have been married for 48 years and have had 5 children of which 3 are still living. A few pages over in the census record is Robert B. Ellis and family. Next door to Robert is the family of John and Mary Chapman of Canada. Their daughter, Bertha, married Clarence J. Ellis, Robert's brother.
