Harry T. Adkins, grandson of Greenberry, writes in the 1950s that Garnet Preston Terry's date of birth is February 14, 1908 and that he married Mary Whitehurst in 1931. However, while the 1930 census records Gernett living in the home of the family of Mary Whitehurst, the 1940 census records not only Garnett as single, but Mary Whitehurst as single and living with her parents.

The 1930 Federal Census for Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia, District 43 records Garnet Terry boarding in the home of Lee E. (40) and Alberta (40) Whitehurst at 716 Colonial Ave. Also in the home are the Whitehusrt children: Mary B. (15) and Anne (14) Whitehurst. Mary will soon marry Garnet, who is employed as a clerk in a Bakery. Lee and Alberta have been married 21 years while Lee is employed as a Clerk in Transportation.

The 1940 Federal Census for Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia, District 114-46, page 539A, dated April 23, 1940 records Garnett Terry (31 - VA) boarding in the home of at 148 West 9th Street. Garnett is a Truck Driver for a Dairy and is listed as single.
