During a March 2004 visit with Thelma [Akers] Montgomery and Bea Akers at the Old Mongomery Family Farm near Boones Mill, VA this researcher was told that William A. Belcher was known as "Buck".


By 1880 it appears that William A. Belcher left the farm and went down the road to Rocky Mount [Franklin Co]. The 1860 and 1870 census records his date of birth as ca 1853 ... see general notes on his father for 1860 & 1870 census facts.

The 1880 Federal Census for The Town of Rocky Mount, Franklin County, District 107, page 164B, dated June 18, 1880 records William A. Belcher (26 - VA/VA/VA) living at 390 Main Street. He is employed as the "Editor of Paper". Near by is the local merchant, Jesse Prunty (58 - VA/VA/VA) and his wife Sally E. Prunty (48 - VA/VA/VA) living at 388 Main Street. This becomes important in that by 1900 William A. Belcher is boarding with Jesse and Sallie Prunty in Rocky Mount ... The 1900 Federal Census for The Town of Rocky Mount, Franklin County, District 32, page 176A, dated June 1, 1900 records William A. Belcher (Jan 1856 - VA/VA/VA) boarding at the home of Jesse (June 1822 - VA/VA/VA) and Sallie (July 1831 - VA/VA/VA) Prunty. William is employed as an Assitant Banker. Note that William has lost a few years in age.

The 1910 Federal Census for The Town of Rocky Mount, Franklin County, District 43, page 180A, dated April 19, 1910 records William A. Belcher (53 - VA/VA/VA). William is the owner of the home and has 3 boarders living there. William is employed as a Tobacconist at a Warehouse.

The 1920 Federal Census for The Town of Rocky Mount, Franklin County, District 58, page 175A, dated January 17, 1920 records Buck Belcher (50 - VA/VA/VA) with his wife Annie Belcher (35 - VA/VA/VA) and son Morris Belcher (9 - VA) living at 205 Claiborne Avenue. William is employed as a Tobacconist at a Warehouse.

The 1930 Federal Census for The Town of Rocky Mount, Franklin County, District 13, page 155B, dated April 10, 1930 records William A. Belcher (74 - VA/VA/VA) with his wife Annie M. Belcher (48 - VA/VA/VA) living at 205 Claiborne Avenue. William has been married since the age of 54 while Annie has been married since the age of 28. William is employed as the Town Treasurer.
