Obituary for Edmond Thomas Glidewell Jr. in the Danville Register and Bee: DANVILLE - Edmond Thomas Glidewell Jr., age 85, of 413 Linden Place, died Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at his residence. He was born on Jan. 30, 1922, in Danville, a son of Edmond Thomas Glidewell Sr. and Arline Burton Glidewell. He was a graduate of George Washington High School, attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Averett College, and the University of Virginia. Mr. Glidewell was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in the European Theater of Operations for two years. He transferred to the reserve unit in 1945 with the rank of captain and retired with the rank of major in 1965. He was employed with Virginia Bank and Trust Company in the management trainee and general commercial bank program from June 1945 to January 1947. Mr. Glidewell had a long banking career with First National Bank, beginning in 1947, and was a former assistant cashier and branch manager before being transferred to the trust department in 1954 as assistant trust officer. In 1962 he was promoted to vice-president and trust officer and became senior vice-president and senior trust officer in 1971. He also held this position with First & Merchants National Bank and Sovran Bank, N.A. He was a charter member of West Main Baptist Church, past president of Danville Optimist Club, past president of Estate Planning Council, member of the Danville Chapter American Institute of Banking, Danville Chapter of Reserve Officers Association, and served on the advisory board of Danville area Clinic for Mental Hygiene. He was also a member of German Club, Reserve Officers Association, Consumer Rationing Committee, past chairman of Economic Stabilization Resource Agency, served on the board of trustees of Employees Retirement System for the city of Danville, and served as chairman of the investment committee. He was a member of the Danville Golf Club, Wildwood Fishing Club, Young Men's Club, board member and past president of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. He served on the city of Danville Zoning Board of Appeals, was former vice-president and board member of Holland Building Corporation, and a former board member of Community Enterprises Corporation. On June 17, 1942, he married the former Mary Garrett, the absolute love of his life, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two loving daughters, Sue Glidewell (Jones) and Jane G. Foster, both of Danville; and two devoted grandchildren, Mary-Whitt Jones and Tom Foster. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Jane Glidewell and Evangeline G. Newman. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 from Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Johnson and the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating. Full military honors will be given by American Legion Dan River Post 1097. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20 at Townes Funeral Home; at other times they will be at the residence.
