DANVILLE - Mary Wortham Garrett Glidewell, 86, of 413 Linden Place died at her residence on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, after a decline in health of nine months.

Born at 863 Paxton Avenue, Danville, VA on January 29, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Albert Earle Garrett, Sr. and Susie Blackwell Garrett.

On June 17, 1942, she married the love of her life, Edward Thomas Glidewell, Jr. who predeceased her on September 19, 2007.

Mrs. Glidewell lived most of her life in Danville. She graduated from George Washington High School, attended Longwood College, and graduated from Averett College. During tobacco season, she enjoyed working for her father at Producers Warehouse.

She was a member of West Main Baptist Church and a past member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. She was a former member of The Jr. Wednesday Club, The Wednesday Club, the Danville Violet Club, and the Danville Golf Club. Her interests were tap dancing, gardening, old movies, weekends at Wildwood, and playing bridge with her long time friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers, Thomas Blackwell Garrett, Jack Walton Garrett, Albert Earle Garrett, Jr. and William Allan Garrett; and four sisters, Frances Garrett Williams, Alice Marie Garrett Anderson, Anne Garrett Penn, and Ruth Garrett Adkins.

She is survived by two loving daughters, Sue B.Glidewell and Jane G. Foster; two devoted grandchildren, Mary-Whitt Frances Jones and Thomas Foster and his wife Laci Foster; one great-granddaughter, Emma Rose Foster; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. from Townes Memorial Chapel with the Reverend Steve Johnson presiding. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Townes Funeral Home on Friday, February 6, 2009 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times will be at the residence, 413 Linden Place.

The family respectfully suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice, 159 Executive Drive, Danville, Va. 24541, The Danville Humane Society, 996 South Boston Road, Danville, VA 24543 or the Alzheimers Association, 1225 West Main Street, Danville, VA 24541.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Linda Johnson, her husband Steve, and her family for the exceptional care she gave Mary during her illness.
