bullet  Marriage Notes:

The actual original marriage between Early and Mattie Sue was May 15, 1905 in Salem, Roanoke County, Va. They kept it a secret and had a formal public marriage in 1908. The 1905 marriage license, found in the Roanoke County Court House in Salem, lists her age as 21 and his as 23. She is actually 18 at the time and they were both living and working in Rockingham Co., N.C. One possible reason for coming to Salem was that Earle Garrett had a cousin, James Price Garrett, and family living there. They were married by H. M. Canter, Minister of the Methodist Church. [Harry Marvin Canter was born in February 3, 1875 in Maryland and a well traveled Methodist Minister. He was married to Margaret Jones Canter.]
