Burton's death certificate shows Burton Benj. Ellis as does his marriage certificate while his tombstone records Burton Binns Ellis. Burton's WWI and WWII Draft Registration records indicate his middle name as Benjamin and date of birth as Oct. 13, 1891. The 1870 Federal Census for Virginia shows his father as Benjamin while the 1880 census shows his father's name as Robert B. Ellis. Both census records have Stephen B. Ellis as Burton's grandfather.

The WWI Draft Registration Card for Burton Benjamin Ellis records his date of birth as October 13, 1891. He is a single, self-employed farmer living in Drewrys Bluff, Chesterfield Co., Virginia. His physical description is short in height and medium in build with blue eyes and brown hair. He signs his card as B. B. Ellis.

The 1940 United States Census for Virginia for Dale, Chesterfield Co., Bermuda, District 21-6, page 103B, dated May 17, 1940 records Burton B. (48 - VA) and Ethel C. (39 - VA) Ellis with their son Carter R. Ellis (5) living on Salem Rd 642. [Near the intersection with Kingsland Rd & Beulah Church Rd] Burton has completed 3 years of high school while Ethel has completed 2 years of college. Burton is a farmer and reports earning $0 while working 52 weeks during the last year. Next door is Nannie B. Chalkley (63 - VA) [Burton's mother's sister] with a nephew Burton W. Chalkley (31 - NC) and his wife Elva D. Chalkley (31 - WV) and their daughter Barbara Ann Chalkley (7 - VA).
