bullet  General Notes:

Known to family as Sister ... but Aunt Ethel to me.
Since Ethel was born in 1901 and I was the "baby of the baby" of the family [Bo Hagen, son of Inez Daughtrey Hagen, youngest sister of Ethel], in my eyes Ethel was always much "older" than my mom. Ethel's mom, Alnona, died when I was just 8 years old but I have wonderful memories of visits to the house on Westwood in Bensley Village where my mother grew up. Ethel and her husband, Burton, lived at Alnona's house at 6731 Westwood Street and there were many family gatherings. All the other cousins were older than I and did not want a little kid around. As the grown-ups gathered around the dining room table, "GranMa" would include me at the table and always offered me "milk tea" as her children and spouses sipped their beverage of choice. Aunt Ethel always made me feel welcome, even after her mother's death in 1956.

I grew into my teen years I was able to get a "learners" driving permit at age 15. I could drive on county roads from my home at 904 Turnbull Ave. to Westwood Street for visits to Aunt Ethel and Aunt Gar and Uncle Lindsey, who lived just down the road on Sherbourne Ave. Of course it was more of an adventure in independence for a 15 year old but I still have fond memories of those times. Aunt Ethel always enjoyed talking about her Daughtrey Family roots and after I turned 16 and got my full driver's license I was able to drive her into town [Richmond] to the State Library where she combed over books and records documenting her Isle of Wight / Nansemond Co. roots.

When Aunt Ethel could no longer stay at Westwood, her son, Carter, purchased the house next door to him in Bon Air. Even as she lost her mobility she always looked forward to family visits where she got out the family pictures. She was proud of her family, past and present, and was always welcoming and delightful in conversation. She is truly missed by all but has left a family legacy that carries on.
