Newman is listed in an article in the May 12, 1918 edition of The Atlanta Constitution. Newman was one of 14 boys from Ellaville High School who was awarded an athletic pin in a contest held by the newspaper. He is also listed in the sports section of The Atlanta Constitution on January 23, 1921 as a High School Athletic Winner from Baxley. His brother, S. E., is listed as a winner from Baxley Grammar School.
