Obituary for Joshua Hagen (1883) Martic Items Death of Mr. Joshua Hagen - Rural School Work - A Monster Egg Mr. Joshua Hagen, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Martic township, departed this life at his residence at Mount Nebo, on last Saturday. Mr. Hagen was born at what is known as Old Martic Forge, Martic township, in the year 1803. He learned the blacksmith trade, a trade which every male member of his family learned. He carried on his trade at Martic Forge for some time, but afterwards removed to Mount Nebo, where he built a house, just fifty-one years ago. That property he disposed of to Mr. Jas. Neel, purchased a farm, known as the "River Hill," in Martic township, resided there for some time, returned to Mount Nebo, and repurchased the property previously owned by him, where he died upon the day above stated. Mr. Hagen was the last male representative of his family, his two brothers having died some years previously. He has three sisters living - Mrs. Henry Andrews, who resides in Lancaster, Miss Mary Hagen, of Mount Nebo, and Mrs. Alexander, widow of the late Thomas Alexander. Mr. Hagen was a man of great mildness of disposition, deep religious convictions, an earnest friend of the right, and an exemplary citizen. One peculiar trait of his character deserves mention. Though never married, he almost worshipped little children. He had more respect for a child and treated them more kindly than any man with whom it has been our good fortune to be acquainted. His funeral took place on Tuesday of last week. His remains were interred in the burying grounds attached to the Mount Nebo Presbyterian church and a sermon appropriate to the occasion was preached by Rev. R. C. Wood.
Joshua Hagen is buried at the cemetery at Mount Nebo Presbyterian Church in what was called Clark's Family Burying Ground before the church was built. Several of Joshua's siblings, nieces, and nephews are buried there as well. The church was built in 1855 and was torn down ca 1990. As of 2008 the borders and headstones are still visible at the graveyard along West View Rd near Mt. Nebo. This is possibly where John Hagen and his son George are buried; however, since John died in 1825 and Joshua's obituary indicates that he came to Mt. Nebo from Martic Forge ca 1832, it is presumed that John, Martha, and their son George are buried near Old Martic Forge rather than in Mt. Nebo.
Noted events in his life were:
• Occupation: Blacksmith/Tax Collector - in 1870 & 1880 as a Farmer.
