General Notes:
The 1900 U.S. Census, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (ED# 891, page 249A) records William Schneider, Jr. (26 - Feb 1874) and wife Ella M. (21 - Sept 1878) with daughters May (2 - May 1898) and Minnie (1/12 - April 1900) living at 6221 Race Street. William is listed as a tin toy worker born in Pennsylvania with both parents in Germany.
The 1910 Federal Census for Ward 44, Philadelphia, Pa., ED 1138, page 241A, visit 135, shows the William Schneider, Jr. (36) family with wife Ella M. (31) and children May (11), Minnie (10), and Gertrude (4). William is the owner of his own meat store and is living at 5056 Reno Street. William is born in Pennsylvania but both parents in Germany.
The WWI Draft Registration Card for William Snyder (sic) records his date of birth as February 27, 1874. He is living at 5056 Ogden Street in Philadelphia and is married to Ella Snyder at the same address. He is employed as a Butcher for what looks to be Rottenborne Bros. His physical description is medium height and stout build with blue eyes and dark brown hair. His card is signed "William Snyder". I have no explanation for the spelling of the surname unless it is part of the anti German sentiment of the time.
The 1920 Federal Census for Ward 44, Philadelphia, Pa., ED 1660, page 245B, taken Jan 4, 1920 shows the William Schmeider [Schneider] (46) family with wife Ella M. (41) and children Mae (22), Minnie (19), and Gertrude (14). William is a Butcher in a meat store and is renting at 5056 Ogden Street. It is of interest that Ogden and Reno Streets are but a block away from each other [5056 Reno Street is reported as their residence in the 1910 census].
The 1930 Federal Census lists this William & Ella Schneider family living in Upper Darby, Delaware Co., Pa. (Dist 144, page 94A) with one daughter, Gertrude (23), at 7123 Seaford Road. It is of interest that next door to William (56) and Ella (51) is Charles A. Helms, nephew of Ella Rannels Schneider. Charles is the son of Ella's sister, Ada Rannels, and is married to Josephine and has a son, Charles Jr. William is a meat cutter and Charles is a Salesman for a Milk Company.
The 1940 Federal Census for Upper Darby, Delaware Co., PA, District 23-224, page 4054A records William (66 - PA) and Ella (61 - PA) Schneider with daughters Gertrude (34 - PA) and May Lambert (41) living at 7132 Seaford Road. William has completed 8 years of schooling and is employed as a meat cutter in a retail meat store earning $650 working 26 weeks in the last year. They are renting their home at $28 / month. Both Gertrude and May have completed 8 years of schooling and are employed as a clerks for an Insurance Publication earning $880 working 52 weeks in the last year. May is indicated as married; however, a line is drawn through the "M". All members of the household were living in Pennsylvania as of April 1, 1935.
