The 1910 United States Federal Census for Lockett District, Prince Edward Co., Virginia, District 105, page 139A records John J. Atkins (sic) (37) with his wife Ada (30) and children Hubbard (13), Percy (10), Lemmon (7), and Bonford (5). John is a farmer and has been married 14 years. He and Ada have had 9 children of which 4 are still living.

I have been unable to find 1920 census records for John Thomas Adkins and family, however, some of his children appear as follows:
Percy Adkins is living with his Uncle and his family in Lockett District, Prince Edward Co.: The 1920 United States Federal Census for Lockett District, Prince Edward Co., Virginia, District 100, page 139B records Percy Atkins (19) in the home of Sam H. Motley (43) with his wife Bessie (29) and their children Gracy (14), Lucile (13), Bertha (12), Douglas (9), Alvin (8), Herman (5), and Ester (3 6/12).
Lemon Adkins is working as a Spooler in a Cotton Mill: The 1920 Federal Census forTunstall, Pittsylvania Co., VA, Dist 163, page 135A records Lemon Adkins boarding at the home of Crawford and Jennie Jones at 25 Pelham Avenue in Tunstall.
Dock Adkins is working as a Shinner(?) in a Cotton Mill: The 1920 Federal Census forTunstall, Pittsylvania Co., VA, Dist 164, page 157B records Dock Adkins boarding at the home of William and Lula Capes at 37 Washington Avenue in Tunstall.
Ernest Adkins is living with his Uncle and his family in Callands: The 1920 Federal Census for Callands, Pittsylvania Co., VA, Dist 140, page 79A records Ernest in the home of William H. Adkins (49) and his wife Mary M. (47) and their children Mary B. (27), Clifton (25), Rodie (23), Rudy (21), Gilbert (20), Russell (17), Garnett (15), Virgie (13), Pearl (11), and Sanders (8). Also in the household is William's Aunt Susan Reynolds (83).

In an email from Violet Nadine (Deanie) Adkins in Dec. 2006 regarding the 1920 census above:
Sam H. is Samuel Howell Motley, son of Samuel Joseph Motley and Augusta Alabama Madden Motley. Bessie is Bessie Catherine Toler/Towler Motley.


The 1930 Federal Census for Pigg River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, District 21, page 186A records John Adkins (55) with his wife Mary B. (33) and sons Malcom L. (4 10/12) and John T. (3 3/12). John's age at first marriage is listed as 24 while Mary's is listed as 26.
