Mr. Akers retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation with over 30 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Eliza Lynch Akers; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Randy Handy, Danville; son and daughter-in-law, Donnie and Norma Jean Akers, Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Tyler Akers Handy, Donald Edward Akers Jr., Dillard Akers, Rhonda Akers; five sisters, Eleanor Bowling, Vinton, Beatrice Akers, Boones Mill, Thelma Montgomery, Boones Mill, Ruby Prillaman, Vinton, Merle Prillaman, Roanoke; three brothers, Weldon Akers, Rocky Mount, John Herbert Akers, Culpepper, E. C. Akers, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, in Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charles R. Doyle officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park. Those desiring to may make memorials to The American Heart Association or to The Alzheimer's Disease Association. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Saturday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 S. Main St., Rocky Mount.

Peter married Eliza Ideal Lynch. (Eliza Ideal Lynch was born on 25 Sep 1909, died on 6 Mar 1995 in Danville City, (Pittsylvania Co.), Virginia and was buried in Mountain View Memorial Park, Franklin Co., Va..)
