bullet  General Notes:

(see notes on daughter Viola)
The 1850 Federal Census for Wetzel Co., Virginia (West) (Dist 64, page 13) records David W. (22), Elizabeth (22), and Mary (2) Higgins. David is listed as a farmer and his wife is listed as being born in Virginia (West Virginia is not yet a state).

The 1860 Federal Census for Wayne Co., Virginia (West) (page 753-Ceredo Post Office) records David W. and Elizabeth Higans with children Mary E. (11), John N. (9), Franklin A. (7), Harriet E. (5), and Serilda J. (3).

The 1870 Federal Census for Ohio (page 472) records David W. Higgins (42) wife Elizabeth (42) and children John (19), Franklin (17), Jane (13), Ellen (6), Winnie M. (3) and Viola (4/12) living in Perry Township, Lawrence Co. with an Ironton Post Office address. David and sons John and Franklin are listed as Iron Ore Miners. Census records are consistent in listing all children as being born in Virginia (West). Since the family is clearly in Ohio in 1870, the family must have moved to the Lawrence Co. area in 1870 after Viola was born.

The 1880 Federal Census for Lawrence Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio (page 237) records David W. Higgins (52-Farmer) wife Elizabeth (51) and children Camilie E. (16), Minnie M. (14), and Viola R. (10).
