The 1880 Federal Census for Lawrence Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio (Dist 93, page 237A) records Viola living with her parents (David (52) and Elizabeth (51) Higgins and siblings Camelie E. (16) and Minnie M. (14). (see notes on her father, David Higgins)

It is of interest that Viola and future husband, Camilus Melvin are listed only a few pages (families) apart (472A/473B) in the 1870 Federal Census for Perry Township (Ironton Post Office), Lawrence Co., Ohio.

The 1910 census indicates that Viola and her father are from West Virginia and her mother from Pennsylvania. The same census records that she has had 7 children of which, four are still alive.

The cause of his death was Gastric Carinoma.
