Franklin Earl Melvin

   Cause of his death was Bronchial Asthma of Tubercular Origin accompanied by Laryngeal Hemorrhage.

  General Notes:

As County Treasurer, Frank was convicted in 1927 of embezzlement of county funds (over $47,000). He was sentenced to 5 years in prison, where he contracted Tuberculosis. He was released due in part to ill health and died soon after.

The 1910 Federal Census for records Cornelius (51) Melvin with wife Viola B. (40) and sons Frank E. (22), Harry C. (14), and William O. (7) living in Perry Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio on Rock Camp Road near Big Ice Creek Road. It is of interest that Frank is listed as a married public school teacher but his wife is living with her parents at the time of the census (see notes on father-in-law John Hill).

The WWI Draft Registration Card for Frank E. Melvin taken June 5, 1917 records his date of birth as February 20, 1888 in Rock Camp, Ohio. He lives and is employed as a merchant in Coal Grove, Ohio. He is short with medium build and dark eyes and black hair.

The 1920 Federal Census, Ohio, Lawrence Co., Coal Grove, District 111, page records Frank E. (31) and Nannie A. (29) Melvin with children Viola M. (9), Meridith E. (6), Margeri P. (4), Mary A. (1) living next door to N. G. (41) and Lois (39) Hill and family. This is Newton Hill, Nannie (Nancy) America's brother and his family. Frank E. Melvin is listed as employed as a grocery merchant.

Franklin married Nancy America Hill, daughter of Rev. John Henry Hill and Pharabey McComas. (Nancy America Hill was born on 22 Mar 1890 in Rock Camp, Ohio, died on 14 Feb 1984 in Portsmouth, Virginia and was buried in Melvin Cemetery, Coal Grove, Ohio.) The cause of her death was Respiratory Failure / Pneumonia / Congestive Cardiac Failure.
