Her grandson, Bob Hill and his family called her Mawmaw. She was affectionately called Nannie by her family and friends.
After Franks death, Nancy and her youngest son, Merlin, went with her sister, Pearl, and her new husband Capt. Baker to Norfolk (ca 1938). Daughter Marjorie was already in Nursing school in Norfolk. Marjorie had been sent to the school by her Aunt Pearl. Nancy could not look after Merlin so she sent him to live with Aunt Mary and Uncle Steven Roberts who had come to live in the Norfolk area with Pearl, Shirley's sister.
The 1930 Federal Census for Coal Grove, Upper Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio (ED# 18, page 10A) records "Nannie" A. Hill (40-widow / Ohio/Ohio/WV) and children Milicent (19), Meredith (16), Marjorie (14), Mary A. (11), and Merlin (3 9/12) living at 39 Memorial Street (possibly a complex).
The 1940 Federal Census for Norfolk City, VA, District 114-47, page 544B, dated April 8, 1940 records Mary A. Massie (21 - OH) with her son Robert F. Massie (4 - OH) living with her sister Marjorie Melvin (24 - OH) and their widowed mother Nannie A. Melvin (50 - OH) at 207 Graydon Avenue. The education completed is as follows: Marjorie has 4 years of high school, Nannie has 8 years of grade school, and Mary has 2 years of high school. Marjorie is a Private Duty Nurse earning $720 while working 50 weeks during the last year; Mary is a waitress earning $36 while working just 12 weeks last year.
