The 1860 Federal Census for Perry Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio records John (44) and Rhoda (36) Melvin with children Aseneth (14), James M. (13), Jonas A. (11), Tabitha E. (9), John C. (5), Charles L. (3), Cornwallis H. (1), and Mary A. (9).

The 1870 Federal Census for Perry Township, Lawrence Co., Ohio records John (56) and Rhoda (46) Melvin with children Amry Ann (19), Tabitha E. (17), John C. (16), Charles C. (14), Camillus H. (12), Caroline D. (9), Sarah E. (7), and William S. (5).

Jonathan and Rhonda continue to live in Perry Township through the 1880 census. The 1880 census for Perry Co., Lawrence Co., Ohio (ED95, page 278B) records John Sr. (66) and Rhoda (58) Melvin with children Camilus H. [Cornielius?] (21), Elizabeth (17), and Sheridan (15) living with them on the farm. Other sons, James, Jonathan, and Charles, have made homes for themselves and families on the adjoining lands.
