Margaret "Peggy" Savage

  General Notes:

The wedding book for this researcher's mother, Inez Wilson Daughtrey Hagen, records her "maternal grand mother's mother" as "Christian Harrell (Wiggins) (Skinner) (Doughtie)" and her "grand mother's grand mother" as "Peggy Savage (Harrell) (Byrd)". Peggy's husband, Christian's father, is recorded as "John Thomas Harrell". [A Virginia Death Record list Riddick & Margaret Harrell as parents of Christian Harrell ... see general notes for Christian Harrell] I have since come to confirm that the parentheses are a notation for married names, thus, Christian was married to a Wiggins, a Skinner, and a Doughtie ... see general notes on Christian Harrell. Similarly, Peggy must have been married to a Harrell and then a Byrd.
Census records confirm a Margaret Byrd with a daughter, Mary A. Byrd, married to William Francis Miltiere. This couple had a daughter nameed Mary Etta Miltiere who later married Bolden Riddick Doughtie after the death of his 1st wife, Inez' grand mother, Cornelia Octavia Wiggins. Inez used to say that she called her grand father's (2nd) wife "cousin Ett". I have researched a great deal to "confirm" that connection but had come up empty with documented proof; however, I have come to the conclusion that Mary Etta Miltiere was indeed the cousin of Cornelia Octavia Wiggins (Doughtie), or at least the 1/2 cousin. The relationship is that Cornelia's grand mother [Christian Harrell (Wiggins)' mother] was Peggy Savage (Harrell) (Byrd) and that after the death of John Thomas Harrell, Peggy married Dempsey Byrd. Dempsey and Peggy had a daughter Mary Ann Byrd who married William Francis Miltiere, who were the parents of Mary Etta Miltiere. Thus, Cornelia and Mary Etta are 1st cousins.
My family files had a Margaret (Byrd) separate from Peggy Savage ... 2 different people; however, as of this date, May 11, 2010, I believe that they are one in the same and will merge the 2 women. Additional documentation appears below:

The 1830 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA [image 73 of 96] records Margaret Harrell as the head of a household consisting of: 1 male (<5), 1 male (5-15), 1 female (20-30) [Margaret], 1 female (5-10) [Christian], 1 female (<5).

The 1840 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., VA [image 79 of 82] records Margaret Byrd as the head of a household consisting of: 2 males (15-20), 1 female (30-40) [Margaret], 1 female (15-20) [Christian], 2 females (5-10), and 1 female (<5).

The 1850 Federal Census for the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co., VA (page 196B) dated November 4, 1850 records Margaret Byrd (47 - Nansemond Co) with her daughter, Mary A. Byrd (15 - Nansemond Co). Also in the household are Francis Byrd (16 - Nansemond Co) and Vernon E. Bland (16 - NC). Next door and near by are Henry Byrd of (29) [that's correct ... "of", like Henry Byrd of John (son of John) but there is no name after the "of"], Esther Byrd (55), Mary Byrd (20), Hester E. Byrd (18), Casandria Byrd (14), and Susan Byrd (11); Daniel H. Byrd (37), Mary Byrd (26), Cornelia Byrd (2); Wm Byrd (50), Moses Byrd (18), and Martha Byrd (16).

Margarett Byrd is living with the William F. Milteer family in 1860 & 1870 in Nansemond Co., Va. (see notes on Christian Harrell) William's wife is Margaret's daughter, Mary Ann Milteer. This is the link that documents Inez Daughtrey Hagen's story about Mary Etta Milteer being referred to as "Cousin Ett" ... ie Mary Etta is the 1/2 sister to Cornelia Octavia Wiggins both of whom were married to Inez' grandfather, Bolden Riddick Doughtie.
