bullet  General Notes:

See general notes on his father for 1880 census facts.

Also of interest is that Abram and his sister, Lula, married siblings: Susan and Stephen Wright.

The 1900 Federal Census for Laurel Fork, Carroll Co., Virginia, District 3, page 77A, dated June 28, 1900 records Abe W. (March 1872) and Susannah (April 1874) Hylton with children Addie V. (Oct 1894), Charlie C. (March 1898), and Willie G. (March 1898). Abe and Susannah have been married for 7 years and have had 3 children. Also in the household is his father James M. Hylton (May 1837). It is of interest that next door is Mahala A. Hylton (August 1845) with her son Cabel (Feb 1882). Mahala and James appear to be separated as they both indicate they are married.

Abram is listed as a widow in the 1910 Federal Census for Carroll Co., VA, District 4: Abram Hylton (38) with children Addie V. (14), Charlie C. (12), Willie G. (12), Dennis E. (9), Avis H. (6), and Clarence (3). Also in the household is his sister Lula L. Wright (40) and his father James M. Hylton (72). A Posey C. Martin (25) is listed as a nephew. It is of interest that next door is Mahala A. Hylton (66) with her son Posey C. (28). Mahala and James appear to be separated, however, Mahala indicates she is a widow while James indicates they are married. Perhaps James has died during the year and is recorded here.

The 1920 Federal Census records Abram Hylton and family in the Laurel Fork District of Carroll Co., VA, District 7 on page 122A: Abram W. (indexed as Alen at ancestry.com) (47) and Annie E. (37) Hylton with children Addie V. (24), Dennis E. (19), Avis H. (16), and India S. (7). Also in the household is the widow Mahala A. Hylton (70).

The 1930 United States Federal Census for Dublin, Pulaski Co., Virginia, District 3, page 94B records Abram W. (58) and Anna E. (48) Hylton with daughter India S. Hylton (18). Abram continues his work as a farmer. Abram indicates his age at first marriage to be 23 while Anna indicates 33.

The 1940 United States Federal Census for Dublin, Pulaski Co., Virginia, District 78-1, page 5A, dated April 16, 1940 records Anis (sic) (68 - VA) and Anna E. (58 - VA) Hylton. bullet  Marriage Notes:

In and email from Mary Ann Sutphin on 11/30/2007:
From: Mary Anne <masutphin@embarqmail.com>
Subject: Re: Lookup Offer in Carroll/Grayson Marriages, by John P. Alderman
To: Bo <lhagen@vt.edu>
The Grayson/Carroll marriages are from 1793-1853, so they would not be listed in the book.
In Ora Bell McColman's book on Mayberry/Mabry, it gives Nancy Isabell's information. Born 3-4-1869 in Carroll, died 1-21-1925, Flat Top, WV. It states she married in Carroll to Abe Hylton, but does not give a date. Also states, her marriage to Abe lasted a short time, perhaps annulled. She went to WV to visit Orleana [her sister] and met Isaiah Lilly from Flat Top, whom she married, (again no date.) They lived Flat Top and had a farm there. Three children listed.
There are some later death records in Carroll. They were found in the basement of the old courthouse having been boxed away for many years.
I will keep your note for my next visit to the courthouse.
