bullet  General Notes:

Emily C. Daughtrey (1879-1976) wrote in her Daughtrey Family History that Harriet Daughtrey, daughter of Mathew, married Tom Jenkins "and to which union two children were born: Tom and Pauline; Emmeline married Bill Allen but had no children.". A letter from Ola Daughtrey to Ethel Daughtrey Ellis ca 1970 states that "Harriet married Turley Jenkins, Emiline m. Bill Allen, left no airs. Turley Jenkins left 6 children, 4 now, others dead." Turley could be a slang for the initials "T. R." Jenkins. It is of interest that North Carolina Birth Index (1800-2000) at ancestry.com records the birth in 1899 in Gates Co., NC of Harriet Emma Jenkins to Tom Turley Jenkins. I believe we have an exceptional coincidence - "Harriet", "Emma", and "Turley" !!! The "Turley" Ola refers to must be Tom and Harriet's son, Thomas Turley Jenkins (see notes on Thomas Turley Jenkins).
Harriet and Emmeline are sisters. The first census record for Harriet is found in 1850 for Isle of Wight: Thomas R. Jenkins (28 - South Carolina) with wife Harriet (21) and daughter Mary A. (1). They are living very near Joshua and Prisilla Daughtrey, Aunt Emily's grandparents. Thomas has real estate valued at $3,000 and owns 6 slaves. It is believed that Thomas inherited the Daughtrey Mill and it became known as Jenkins Mill which lives on in the name of the road that goes by the old mill location, Jenkins Mill Road, in Nansemond County [now City of Suffolk, VA]. The 1850 census has no record of Mathew Daughtrey.

The 1850 Federal Census for the Eastern District, Isle of Wight Co., VA, page 163A, dated Oct 17, 1850 records Thos R. (28 - South Carolina) and Harriet H. Jenkins (21 - VA) with a daughter Mary H. Jenkins (1). Thomas is a farmer with real estate valued at $3,000. The famly is living near by Joshua and Pricilla Daughtrey and family. Harriet's sister, Emeline, is living with Exum Jenkins, who was appointed the guardian for Harriet and her sister Emeline during the 1840 - 1841 court hearings after the death of their father, Mathew Daughtrey ... see general notes for Emeline Daughtrey.

The 1860 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., VA, page 373 records Thomas R. (38 - South Carolina) and H. [Harriet Daughtrey listed as a spinster] A. (28 - VA) Jenkins with daughter P. A. Daughtrey (3 - VA) [Pauline]. Thomas is a farmer with real estate valued at $6,000 and a personal estate valued at $5,500, including 7 slaves. Also in the household is Fanny E. Daughtrey (22 - VA) [Harriet's sister, Emmeline]. Fanny has real estate valued at $6,000 and a personal estate valued at $8,000, including 2 slaves. They are living very near Joshua and Prisilla Daughtrey. Tom and Harriet's daughter, Mary (see 1850 census record above), has evidently died, P. A. is Pauline, and Fanny E. Daughtrey is Emmeline.

The 1870 Federal Census for Windsor Township, Isle of Wight Co., VA, Zuni Station P. O., page 290B, dated August 4, 1870 records Thos R. (48) and Harriet A. (34) Jenkins with children Pauline (13), Fanny B. (8), and Thomas T. (4). Also in the household is Lucy Jenkins, a 20 year old black house servant. Nearby is Wm [William] B. Allen (37 - North Carolina) and wife Fannie E. (25) [Emmeline Daughtrey] without children. A few doors away is the Daughtrey household headed by Joseph John Daughtrey. J. J. 's father, Joshua recently passed away, however, his mother, Priscilla, is still living there. It is most interesting how Harriet fails to age appropriately in the various census records.

The 1880 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., Va. records T. R. (57) and H. A. (40) Jenkins with children P. A. (20) and T. T. (14). Nearby is J. J. Daughty [Joseph John Daughtrey] with wife A. E. (30) [Anna Elizabeth Moore] and children R. T. (4) [Richard Tazewell] and E. J. (2) [Effie Jane]. Also in the household is G. W. More (20) [George Washington Moore, Anna's brother]. "Bill and Emmeline" Allen are not listed in the census records for Isle of Wight Co. in 1880; however, they appear to be living in Norfolk, VA at that time ... see general notes on Emmeline Daughtrey for additional 1880 census facts.
