bullet  General Notes:

Murder of 'Jennie' Hill
maureenmc118 from ancestry.com added this on 17 Jul 2010:
Jennie, as she was known, was a beautiful blond girl who was loved by everyone who knew her. On the afternoon of June 18th, 1885, at the young age of 13, she was murdered by a young man named Thomas Freeman. She and her mother were on their way home from the dressmakers. He waited in the yard for them to return. Tom was employed by Jennie's father Timothy, as a hired hand. Tom loved Ginnie and had asked her parents several times for permission to marry her, but was denied. Thomas could not bear to be without her and shot her in the neck, causing her death within a few hours. He then shot her mother Zippora in the head but she survived. Thomas then shot himself and died immediately. The shooting was witnessed by Jennie's older brother. This was the first recorded murder on the Island. I am not sure if her nickname is Jennie or Gennie.

Terrible Deed of a Rejected Sailor
Tasley, June 18 - William Freeman, aged 18, this morning, on Chincoteague Island, shot Tomothy Hills, his wife and daughter and then killed himself. He had courted the daughter of Hills, and she, it is supposed at the instance of her mother, declined his suit. It is feared that all three will die. Mr. Hills is one of the most prominent citizens of the island.
