Jethro (Jet) P. Rhodes

  General Notes:

Jet Rhodes enlisted in the Isle of Wight AvEngineers Regiment Virginia as a Corporal on August 24, 1861 at the age of 22. He transfered to Company F, 7th Battn Regiment Virginia on December 15, 1861 and was promoted to Full Sergeant 5th Class on May 15, 1862 (Estimated day). He then was transferred to Company F, 61st Infantry Regiment Virginia on August 8, 1862 and was hospitalized on September 6, 1862 at Richmond, VA Hospl 21 (With diarrhea). He returned to duty on September 13, 1862. On November 15, 1862 (Estimated day), he was promoted to Full Sergeant 4th Class.
On June 15, 1863 he was detailed at Orange Court House, VA (Est. day, to provost duty). He was captured at Burgess' Mill, VA on October 27, 1864 and confined on October 29, 1864 at City Point, VA and later transferred 2 days later to Point Lookout, MD.
He was exchanged on February 10, 1865 and on rolls on February 17, 1865 at Camp Lee, VA. Jethro Rhodes was paroled on April 25, 1865 at Isle of Wight Co, VA.

The 1900 Federal Census for Virginia, Isle of Wight Co., Windsor, District 18, page 125B, dated June 6, 1900 records Jethro (March 1840) and Martha C. (June 1848) Rhodes with children Willie J. (Aug 1871), James J. (Dec 1874), Robert A. (Jan 1878), Beecher L. (April 1885), and Maude (Oct 1886). They have been married 31 years and have had 11 children of which 6 are still alive. Jethro is a farmer, Willie is a School Teacher, James is a Salesman for a Dry Goods Store, and Robert is a farm laborer.

The 1920 Federal Census for Virginia, Isle of Wight Co., Windsor, District 5 records the widower Jethro P. Rhodes (80) with son-in-law Ernest Rhodes (35) and his wife Maude A. (32) and their son John P. Rhodes (5/12).
