William H Strum, a farmer from Granville County, North Carolina, enlisted as a Private on February 25, 1862 at the age of 29. On April 3, 1862 he enlisted in Company A, 44th Infantry Regiment North Carolina. He was promoted to Full Sergeant on June 10, 1862 but was reduced to the rank of Full Private on March 30, 1863. He was wounded on June 26, 1863 at South Anna Bridge, VA and absent, without leave, on November 30, 1863 (Estimated day). Because of wounds, he was absent on September 30, 1864. He transferred to Company A, 44th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on February 17, 1865.

The 1860 Federal Census for Warren Co., N.C. , page 257B records W. H. Strum (27) with wife M. A. (28) and children W. H. (3), S. G. (2), and L. H. (3/12).

The 1870 Federal Census for Townsville, Granville Co., N.C. , page 376A records William Strum (35) with wife Mary (26) and children William (12), Lewis (8), Sis (10), and John (6). [Sis is Sallie Green]

The 1880 Federal Census for Townsville, Granville Co., N.C. (Dist 106, page 500A) records W. H. Strum (48) with wife Mary Ann (48) and children William H. (23), Lewis H. (19), and John T. (16). Daughter Sallie Green Strum is married to Robert Blackwell and is listed on the next page of the census.

It appears that William lost his first wife, Mary Ann Harris, remarried, and lost his 2nd wife as well. He moved to Nash County, NC and is found in the 1900 Census:
The 1900 Federal Census for Stoney Creek, Nash Co., N.C., District 66, page 243A, dated June 1, 1900 records the widower W. H. Strum (March 1832 - NC/NC/NC) with his daughter, Lula A. Strum (Dec 1898). Also in the household is his mother-in-law, the widow Nancy Proctor (January 1833 - NC/NC/NC).

From a May 18, 2012 email:
Bo,
Thanks for your reply and the Strum family research posted on your page. I am a rank amateur in the geneology field and a slow typist. I will try to answer your questions. One thing I have learned for sure is that the info on familysearch.org is not always accurate, esp spelling. Transfering data from handwritten docs to typing is also subject to misinterpretation as in Seneis for Louis and Lewis vs Louis, the loops in the handwriting are a problem.
I found the info on the graves of Wm H and Mary A Strum in the digital files for NC under the Historical Resords Survey of NC then under cemeteries which is searchable. I visited the York Chapel graves and noted the head stone info. W.H. Strum Mar 28,1832 d.Mar 15,1911 & Mary A. Strum May 1, 1831, d. Mar 5,1895. The child Alfred L. Strum Oct 7,1893 d. Oct 29,1897 was the son of William Daniel and his first wife Lucy A Strum not WHS & Mary A. I wasn't clear on that one. It appears that Martha A. Proctor was WHS second wife. MaryA. died in1895 and he married MAP 10 Nov 1897. WHS & MAS children were William Daniel, my grandfather, Louis (not Seneis) Henry and John Thomas and Sis, Sallie Green Strum. The family info written by W D son George L' s wife lists Wm Green Strum b 1796 d.1859 as Wm Henry Strum(1832) father but no spouse. Also says Wm Henry Strum married Birgette Jordan. And says Wm H. Strum came to America from Scotland in 1760. This was written in the mid 1940's when no one wanted to be German. Says came from not born there.
The photos I mentioned can be found at www.floridamemory.com under photo collection search by Louie W. Strum. The image numbers are HA00142, Ha00142A, RC00877, HA00001,HA00002 Louis Henry Strum was a member of and likely captain of the Florida Cycling Club about 1885 to1899.Another interesting one is Google St. Petersburg Times and
search Louis H. Strum form 1901 archives.
Yes, you may use my info in your posting and many thanks for your work and sharing it.
Regards, Bill Strum
