Obituary for Verlie D. Gardner
MURFREESBORO -- Verlie Doughtie Gardner, 97, slipped quietly from this life June 29, 2002, at Guardian Care in Ahoskie. Before entering Guardian Care in late May, she lived in Murfreesboro for the past 20 years.
Verlie was the last member of her generation of children born to James Raleigh Doughtie and Fannie Lewis Baker Doughtie of Kelford, her parents having passed on in 1929 and 1940 respectively.

Born in 1904, Verlie was known to all as a determined, independent lady of great spirit and perseverance. She had overcome severe childhood arthritis to graduate from Roxobel-Kelford High School in 1932 at the age of 27 and was the school's oldest living graduate. After graduating from Norfolk Business College, Verlie worked as a legal secretary in Norfolk for 20 years before accepting employment with the Army Corps of Engineers, where she worked until retirement. She was an active member the Eastern Star, having served as past Worthy Matron of Westminster Chapter No. 99. She and her husband moved to Murfreesboro in the early 1980s. She was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church and a supporter of Chowan College.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Thomas Caulkins and the Rev. Dr. Davis Smith Jr. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to Murfreesboro Baptist Church Building Fund.
