In the death of Mr. J. R. Doughtie, which occurred at his home two miles south of Kelford on the Lewiston road, Friday night about ten o'clock, this community looses (sic) one of its landmarks that has stood as a monument of good citizenship for nearly four score years. In young manhood Mr. Doughtie married Miss Mittie Acree, whose ancestors came to Roxobel township with the early settlers. She was related to the Higg's, the Viers'es (sic) and the Berry's, names long since extinct from the roster of Bertie county people. To this union there are six children now living. After the death of his first wife, thirty-five or more years ago, he was married to Miss Fannie Baker of Northampton County, who survives him with four children, all grown. Mr. Doughtie was a good neighbor and a splendid farmer. Until a few years ago when he became incapacitated from rheumatism he was very active on his farm and always raised good crops and good stock; he was always ready to lend a helping hand to his neighbors and by his gentility he was very popular and had many friends who always delighted to have him in their social gatherings. For the past few years his kinspeople and friends would meet at this home on the anniversaries of his birth and would hold a day of jolification. On his last birthday in 1928 a crowd of several hundred people assembled to pay homage to the worth of this honored citizen and receive his cordial hand shake and extend greetings and good wishes for his future well being. Some sixty years ago, under the preaching of the Rev. Mr. Danning, at Harmon's Cross Roads, now Aulander, under a bush shelter erected for the services, Mr. Doughtie accepted Christ as his Savior and joined the Baptist Church. At his death he was a member of the Kelford Baptist Church and Kelford Lodge of Odd Fellows. The funeral service was held from the home conducted by his pastor, the Rev. J. I. Kendrick, the active pallbearers were his sons and sons in law. His body was laid to rest on his farm near the home in the presence of a large concourse of friends and loved ones and his grave was covered with wreaths of beautiful flowers in token of the esteem and love in which he was held.
