Lewis joined the 38th Infantry, Company B, of the Confederate Army late in the war, April 22, 1864.
Harry T. Adkins, grandson of Greenberry, writes in the 1950s, that Louis married Betty Bradner and had one son, Rob. Marriage and Census records indicate Lewis married Elizabeth Bradley and had at least 4 children.
The 1880 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA (District#164, page 66A) taken June 23, 1880 records Luis (32) and Betty (29) Adkinds with children Robert (4), Thomas (2), and Baby (3/12 - male).
The 1900 Federal Census, Pittsylvania Co., VA, Dist 71, page 227B (Sheet 4), dated June 6, 1900 records Louis Adkins (Apr 1842) with his wife Elizabeth K. (May 1846) and sons Thomas (May 1878) and Beverly (Mar 1881) and daughter Minnie K. (Dec 1883). Louis and Elizabeth have been married for 24 years and have had 5 children all of whom are still living.
The 1910 Federal Census for Callands, Pittsylvania Co., VA (ED#89, visit 156, page 77B) records Louis and Elizabeth Adkins with their widowed daughter Minnie Mays (24) and grand children Mary A. (8), Essie (4), and Georgie A. (2) Mays.
