bullet  General Notes:

An Elizabeth Adkins applied for a pension in 1888 as a widow of a Confederate Veteran. On the pension application Elizabeth notes that her husband, Jackson, served in Co. C, 5th Res(erves) (Vol 15, page 448, Muster rolls, VSLA) and died March 14, 1864 "at home on furlough from dropsy contracted in the Army".

The July 10, 1860 Census lists Jackson (45), Elizabeth (38), Elizabeth (19), Green B (17), Polly W. (15), Lewis (13), Isabella (12), Salina (10), Enox (10), Agnus (8), John (6), Lucy (6), and Henry (1). It should be pointed out that Jackson's mother (which is also Elizabeth's Aunt) was named Isabel.

The 1880 Federal Census Callands, Pittyslvania Co., VA, District 164 (indexed incorrectly as District 163 at ancestry.com), page 46B (page 2) lists Elithebeth [Elizabeth] Adkinds (57) with children Isabeller (29), Salina (27), Aggie (25), Henry (19), and Anny [Nanny] (18). Viewing of the actual image, recorded by R. W. Cabell on June 1, 1880, seems to confirm the unusal spellings created by Mr. Cabell (with the exception of Salinia). This spelling of Adkinds continues throughout the Callands District recorded by Mr. Cabell. The "Anny (Nanny)" as described above may be a daughter-in-law and not a daughter ... see notes on son Henry for 1900 and 1910 census facts.

The 1900 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., Va. (ED#71, Sheet 1, page 224A) records Elizabeth Adkins (June 1923) with daughter Isabel (Dec 1840), son Henry (May 1864), and daughter-in-law Nannie B. Adkins (June 1866) and grandsons Letcher W. (Apr 1891) and Walter K. (July 1897). It is uncertain whether or not this Nannie B. Adkins is an unmarried daughter of Elizabeth or is married to Elizabeth's son, Henry (although the census records "daughter-in-law"). This census indicates Elizabeth has had 14 children of which 10 are still living and that Nannie B. and Henry have been married 10 years with 2 children, however, lines are drawn through the 10s. The marrital status for Henry and Nannie is written as "M" [married] for both but erased for Nannie and "S" is written in. This researcher's best guess is that this "daughter-in-law", Nannie B. Adkins, is not the daughter of Jackson and Elizabeth because the 1930 obituary for Jackson and Elizabeth's son, Green Berry Adkins, reports that Green Berry is survuived by his sister, Mrs. Thomas Adkins .... and that the 1910 census records a recently married Thomas B. and Nannie B. Adkins living near by another Nannie B. Adkins (with sons Letcher and Walter).
